Autumn Update
My heart has been stirring for me to communicate with you over the past few months. Yet, I wasn’t sure what to say. Today, I am pleased to provide a few updates. Each has presented opportunities for growth, encounter, and gratitude.
Sometime ago, I received an inquiry from a colleague who had developed an idea for a book, Wisdom of Our Elders: Living in Spirit, Wisdom, Deep Mercy, and Truth. Edited by Karen Simms Towson and published this year by Wipf and Stick, it is a beautiful collection of essays on cultural and religious traditions from a diverse group of writers. My essay is entitled “The Bursting of Bubbles.” You may read more about the book and contributors on the website. In the spring, Pax Christi USA invited me to write the reflections for their 2024 Advent booklet. I eagerly accepted the invitation but was challenged by the need to first clear my mind so that it and my heart would align. The thought of writing 31 individual pieces based on liturgical readings was new for me and seemed to foster its own anxiety. Entitled Seeking Wisdom’s Light, the booklet is available to order on Pax Christi USA’s website. Recently, New Ways Ministry asked if I would write a Sunday reflection based on the liturgical readings. My reflection will be published on Sunday, September 29. I am not sure of the title, but you can read it this Sunday. (https://www.newwaysministry.org/category/scripture/)
Two years ago, I entered the apprenticeship program of the Guild for Spiritual Guidance. I entered the program understanding their desire to racially diversify the program. We experienced challenges early on that allowed us to bond as a cohort. As one of two people of color, and the only African American in our group, I am proud to be forever known as a member of AP XXII. We graduate on October 6.
